In the 2002 North American Industry Classification System (N.A.I.C.S) definition, physical therapistsâ?(TM) services were described as â?oeadministering medically prescribed physical therapy treatment for patients suffering from injuries of muscle, nerve, joint, and bone disease.? At the suggestion of the American Physical Therapy ALisassociation (A.P.T.A), the Economic Classification Policy Committee (E.C.P.C) has altered the definition to â?oeproviding physical therapy services to patients who have impairments, functional limitations, disabilities, or changes in physical function and health status resulting from injury, disease, or other illnesses; or who require prevention, wellness, or fitness services.? The new definition removes the reference to the need for medical prescription for physical therapy and provides a broader and more accurate description of current physical therapist practice.

Neuro-Developmental Treatment (N.D.T) is an advanced therapeutic approach practiced by experienced Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapists, and Speech - Language Pathologists. This hands-on approach is used in working with people who have central nervous system insults that create difficulties in controlling movement. Therapists using N.D.T treatment have completed advanced training in N.D.T and work closely with individuals with neurological challenges (e.g. cerebral palsy, stroke, head injury), helping them to become as independent as possible. N.D.T-trained therapists work collaboratively with individuals, family, caregivers and physicians to develop comprehensive treatment programs based on the principles of human neurology and physiology. Individuals who have minimal to severe motor difficulties can benefit from the N.D.T approach.

The Neuro-Developmental Treatment (N.D.T/Bobath) approach was developed for the treatment of individuals with Pathophysiology of the central nervous system (C.N.S), primarily children with cerebral palsy (CP) and adults with cerebral vascular accidents (C.V.A). Individuals with C.N.S Pathophysiology have dysfunction in posture and movement and subsequent functional activity limitations.

For many patients we also utilize partial weight bearing training, a therapeutic intervention used to promote the generation of normal walking patterns by controlling weight bearing, balance, and posture during walking therapy. This type of therapy is shown to be useful for Spinal Cord Injuries, Strokes, Head Injuries, Cerebral Palsy, Multiple Sclerosis, Amputation, Balance Issues, Orthopedic Problems, and Arthritis. The Christopher Reeves Foundation is funding research projects involving this type of locomotion training.
